Freedom from Torture is dedicated to healing and protecting people who have survived torture. We provide therapies to improve physical and mental health, we medically document torture, and we provide legal and welfare help. We expose torture globally, we fight to hold torturing states to account and we campaign for fairer treatment of torture survivors in the UK.
We are seeking to recruit up to two new Trustees to join our committed Board of Trustees (for at least a three year term). These are non-remunerated roles but we do cover expenses.
Torture tries to silence and break people. It is illegal, doesn’t work, and is always wrong. Yet it happens to people across the world. We stand with torture survivors, providing therapy and support, and fighting for change together.
Every day our committed teams in Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Newcastle transform the lives of torture survivors by helping them to rehabilitate, secure legal protection and recover what torturers tried to take away: their self-worth, capacity to trust and love others, and power to fight injustice.
We are recruiting up to two Trustees with a significant track record of success in one or more of the following areas:
- Digital campaigning and mobilisation – with a focus on expertise in cutting edge campaigning methodologies
- Strategic communications – spanning branding, messaging and media
- Human rights – with particular focus on the torture ban and refugee protection
- Technology – including knowledge and understanding of customer relationship management databases
- Fundraising
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and steer our organisation and to support and make a real difference to our clients. We are committed to achieving a diverse Board and would be particularly interested to hear from survivors of torture who have experience in one or more of these areas.
Trustees are expected to attend about 8 meetings a year, as well as two extended Board sessions for team building and development days, and to undertake at least two visits to our centres across the UK. Board and committee meetings are held in London with an expectation that attendance can be a combination of in-person and via video link.
We provide a fulsome induction for all new trustees and gladly offer training and capacity-building opportunities on governance and trustee responsibilities, as required.
